Birth Defects Caused by Agent Orange

چکیده

During the Vietnamese War between 1961 and 1971 the United States armed forces engaged in a defoliation and crop destruction campaign named Operation Ranch Hand. Agent Orange, an herbicide so named because of the orange color of its storage barrels, was the most heavily used herbicide of the campaign. In addition to military personnel from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the United States, an estimated 4.8 million Vietnamese were exposed to herbicides during the war. In the years following the war reports of increased rates of birth defects [3] in the offspring of United States military personnel, Vietnamese soldiers, and civilians prompted several studies to explore the connection between Agent Orange exposure and birth defects [3]. Studies performed over three decades by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Australian government, and by Vietnamese researchers obtained mixed results. Several of these studies found, among the offspring of parents exposed to Agent Orange, higher than normal rates of neural tube [4] birth defects [3] such as spina bifida [5] and anencephaly. However, despite large sample sizes in many of these studies, the inherently low incidence of birth defects [3] resulted in weak statistical correlations with Agent Orange exposure. Furthermore, the publication of statistically significant, yet potentially biased findings by Vietnamese research agencies linking Agent Orange exposure and birth defects [3] has fueled global scientific debate about the issue.

Agent Orange Birth Defects

Sprayed extensively by the US military in Vietnam, Agent Orange contained a dioxin contaminant later found to be toxic to humans [7]. Despite reports by Vietnamese citizens and Vietnam War veterans of increased rates of stillbirths and birth defects [8] in their children, studies in the 1980s showed conflicting evidence for an association between the two. In 1996, the US National Academy of Sci...

Association between Agent Orange and birth defects: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND The association between parental exposure to Agent Orange or dioxin and birth defects is controversial, due to inconsistent findings in the literature. The principal aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of relevant epidemiological studies that examined this association and to assess the heterogeneity among studies. METHODS Relevant studies were identified through a comp...

Agent Orange as a Cause of Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is a birth defect that affects the spines of developing fetuses and infants, and research in the 20th century indicated that chemicals in the herbicide Agent Orange likely led to the birth defect. People with spina bifida [6] can have nerve damage, paralysis, and mental disabilities. During the Vietnam War in the 1960s, the US military employed Agent Orange and other herbicides to ...

Impact of chemical warfare with agent orange on women's reproductive lives in Vietnam: a pilot study.

During the American war in Vietnam, huge quantities of the highly toxic herbicide dioxin ('Agent Orange'), were sprayed over large areas of central and south Vietnam. In addition to polluting the environment and causing cancers and other diseases in those directly exposed to it, dioxin has caused high rates of pregnancy loss, congenital birth defects and other health problems in their children....
